Saint Francis Cancer Treatment Center is the largest medical facility offering comprehensive cancer care in Greater Nebraska. The cancer center, which is accredited through the American College of Surgeons, offers exceptional care with quality diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and follow up for patients with all types of cancer.
The Department of Radiation Oncology is one of the components of the Cancer Treatment Center. Radiation is provided as part of the individual’s integrated cancer treatment or as the primary source of treatment. The radiation oncologist works closely with family physicians, surgeons, urologists, pathologists, radiologists and medical oncologists to provide a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of cancer. This allows the patient to make decisions regarding different treatment options and to begin those treatments in a timely manner.
The radiation oncology department uses a linear accelerator, which can produce radiation of different energies depending upon what the physician prescribes, to properly treat different types of cancers.
Advancements made in radiation therapy allow targeting of specific cancer cells while sparing healthy ones. Continuation of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) has allowed patients to receive high dose radiation to the site where it is most needed – the tumor – while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue of certain side effects. A Linear Accelerator with RapidArc technology was installed at Saint Francis in 2010, and was the first to be installed in Nebraska. The RapidArc technology rotates in a smooth arc around the patient, more accurately targeting the tumor. It also features an On-Board Imager and a Cone Beam CT scanner, which use images to guide patient placement and treatment delivery. This treatment is made possible by our highly-trained radiation oncologist, dosimetrist, physicist, and radiation therapists.
The department provides full radiation services on weekends for emergency cases. Appointments for consultations should be made through the patient's primary care physician or they may call the Cancer Treatment Center Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 P.M. at 308-398-5450 or toll free 800-998-2119.
