Every case of breast cancer is different, and there are several treatment options. But there is a treatment path that is best suited to each type of cancer. We use a collaborative approach to identify, coordinate, and execute the appropriate method for your cancer. Referred to as multidisciplinary care (MDC), our approach brings together professionals from several disciplines to facilitate comprehensive cancer treatment and ensure all members of your care team are on the same page at all times.

The MDC team meets every other week to discuss new breast cancer cases. Called the MDC conference, this meeting is the time for members of your care team to examine all the options and make a recommendation regarding the best way to treat your cancer.

Medical Disciplines

Pathology
The pathologist is the individual responsible for examining tissue taken from the breast and determining whether the cells are malignant (cancerous) or benign. He or she provides a pathology report, which presents the findings and diagnosis. The report will include information such as the size and appearance of the cancer, how quickly the cells grow, signs indicating spread to healthy tissue, and any unique factors believed to influence the cancer’s growth and behavior. Your cancer care team will use this report as the basis for planning your treatment.

Medical Oncology
The medical oncologist is a doctor who specializes in the treatment of cancer using medications taken orally or by injection (including chemotherapy). The medical oncologist reviews the results of the pathology report and other tests, works with other members of your care team to determine the best course of treatment for your particular type of cancer, and educates you about all of your options. He is responsible for managing your overall cancer care and monitoring your progress throughout treatment.

Radiation Oncology
A radiation oncologist is a doctor who specializes in the treatment of cancer using radiation therapy. Radiation may be administered independently or in conjunction with chemotherapy. If the MDC team determines that radiation is right for your type of cancer, the radiation oncologist will lead the planning of this portion of your treatment.

Surgery
The breast surgeon performs lumpectomies and mastectomies to remove cancerous tissues. Our surgeons can also perform oncoplastic surgery and breast reconstruction. Surgery may take place at various phases in the course of your care, depending on the course of treatment recommended by the MDC team.

Radiology
The radiologist uses imaging (X-ray, ultrasound, CT, PET, MRI, mammography) to diagnose and treat your cancer. He will determine the location and size of the tumor as well as the extent to which the disease has developed.
