The National Safe Kids Campaign was organized in 1988, a cooperative effort by the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and Johnson & Johnson. The mission of the National Safe Kids Campaign is to prevent unintentional deaths and injuries to children ages 14 and under.

Who we are

A Safe Kids Coalition is a structured group of diverse individuals and organizations that have joined forces to carry out ongoing community efforts to reduce unintentional injuries to children. Coalitions are made up of a cross-section of community leaders and citizens. Included in the Safe Kids Tri-Cities of Nebraska Coalition are law enforcement officers, firefighters and paramedics, medical and health professionals, educators, businesses, public officials, kids, parents, other volunteers and hopefully you. All that is needed to become a coalition volunteer is a desire to preserve our precious resource: our children. Coalition members work together to meet our common goal, Safe Kids. Call (308) 398-6584 for more information.

The Problem

  • Preventable injuries are the number one killer of children ages 14 and under in the United States.
  • Each year, one out of every four children is hurt seriously enough to require medical attention.
  • These injuries cost society $165 billion annually.
  • Ninety percent of these injuries could be prevented if families took the simple steps necessary to protect their children.

The Solution

  • Educate parents in proper child restraint usage.
  • Promotion of bicycle helmet usage.
  • Promotion of the use of personal flotation devices.
  • Installation of smoke detectors and promotion of regular battery checks.
  • Education to keep all poisons and small objects out of reach of small children.
  • Promotion of firearm safety measures.
  • Education for families on proper hot water heater temperature settings.

Functions of the Safe Kids Coalition

  • Work together to target injury problems that are prevalent in the community.
  • Combine the resources of a wide variety of people and organizations.
  • Plan and implement a multifaceted strategy that combines community action, public awareness, education, technology, and public policy initiatives.
