Saint Francis Cancer Treatment Center is the largest medical facility offering comprehensive cancer care in Greater Nebraska. The cancer center, which is accredited through the American College of Surgeons, offers exceptioanl care with quality diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and follow up for patients with all types of cancer.
The Department of Radiation Oncology is
one of the components of the Cancer Treatment Center. Radiation is
provided as part of the individuals integrated cancer treatment or as
the primary source of treatment.
Mark Bolton, PhD., M.D. a board
certified radiation oncologist has been treating patients at the Cancer
Treatment Center since 1992. Dr. Bolton works closely with Family
physicians, Surgeons, Urologists, and Medical oncologists to provide a
comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of
cancer. This allows the patient to make decisions regarding different
treatment options and to begin those treatments in a timely manner.
The radiation oncology department uses a linear accelerator , which can produce radiation of different energies depending upon what the physician prescribes, to properly treat different types of cancers. A new Varian 2100EX Linear Excelleration equiped with a millennium Multileaf 120 and Portal Vision will be installed in a newly constructed vault in early 2001. Radiation Oncology also provides radiation implants. Brachytherapy for the treatment of gynecological maligancies. The prostate seed brachytherapy program for the primary treatment of prostate cancer has been initiated and is under the direction of the Radiation Oncologist, Mark Bolton, PhD., M.D. and Urologist, James Wendt, M.D. The department is staffed by certified radiation therapists, certified dosimetrist and nurses certified in oncology. A medical physicist provides ongoing quality assurance as to the amount of radiation that is delivered to each patient for each treatment.
The department provides full radiation services on weekends for emergency cases. Home Health, Hospice, Social Work, Dietary, Rehabilitation, as well as other support services of the hospital, participate in the care of our cancer patients.
